SUPER SIZE ME Project DUE : January 14, 2013

Introduction

Often, supermarkets need enlarged versions of products for in-store displays. Thus for a Super Bowl display, the market may need a 5 foot long football. Mathematicians call the enlargement a dilation.

For this project, you will choose a 3-dimensional object and dilate it. A dilation of the plane from O with a scale factor c (= 0) is the transformation of the plane in which the origin O is mapped to itself and a point P is mapped to the point P’, where O, P, P’ are collinear and OP” = cOP. In other words, MAKE THE OBJECT BIGGER (proportional in all directions – length, width and height).

Assignment

You will construct (hand craft, no purchasing other than raw materials) the new object to look exactly like the original object only bigger. This includes color, material appearance, wording, and shape. You must construct the new object from scratch. All dilations (enlargement) will be measured for accuracy.

Any and all wording must be written or drawn. You may not use a computer or Xerox machine to copy the labels in order to glue them on your dilation.

You must turn in your original object along with your dilation.

Procedures for Writing Assignment

In addition to your object, please provide the following information (word processed) on one page.

Why did you choose the object to dilate?

1. What scale factor did you use (2 times bigger, 3 times bigger,etc,)
2. What materials did you use to construct your dilation?
3. Give the dimensions (measurement of length, width, height) of your original object and your bigger object.
4. Where might you see the dilation of the object you chose and what purpose would it serve? (why would it be useful in todays society?)
